Thorold, Ontario (August 5) For the
16th season, Merrittville Speedway remembered Trevor Wilkens
with the Civic Holiday Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series
100 lap Big Block Main Event.
Jimmy Phelps won his first
Merrittville Feature and of 2008 as a regular along the season
long series.
Rae fans can look for all the
news on the event that the Thorold track has hosted since 1972

Two Lucas Oil Weekly Racing
Series Divisions shared the bill with Adam Leslie and Jeff
Dayman winning the Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite and Hoosier Stock
Main Events respectively.
The Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite 20
lap Feature was the second Mod Lite Stars Championship Tour
North Event of the season and it began on a somber note with the
pole position left open in memory of Randy Wilkin.
The Elmira native was Crew Chief
for both Wally and Scott Billing and Rick Brubacher and would
lend anyone else a hand if needed. While working in Alberta last
month he was in a motor vehicle accident and succumbed to his
injuries.
He was also a 30+ year volunteer
with the Elmira Sugar Kings Junior B Hockey Club.
Randy’s passing is quite a loss
to both the racing and hockey communities.
When Starter Doug Leonard’s
green flag let the field of motorcycle-engined cars loose –
Shawn Sliter was the early leader.
Leslie took control of top spot
from Sliter just before the halfway point. Two cautions would
slow the pace but through-out the last half of the event –
Leslie would remain out front to the checkered flag.
For Leslie it was the second win
of the season.
Leslie was followed by Sliter,
Dan Russell, Paul Klager and Jordan Curran.
Russell was found to be just
underweight in post race inspection and so Scott Billing was
then credited with 5th place after the others were moved up.
The second Hoosier Stock Duel on
the Dirt Home Track event saw 2008 Rookie Brett Robbins as the
early leader after drawing the pole in the redraw after
qualifying. The battle for second between Mike Dooley and Shayne
Pierce allowed Robbins to pull away to a comfortable lead on the
field.
The former karter unfortunately
lost control of his car in turn 2 of lap 8 with Pierce the new
leader on the restart. Dooley was now being challenged by Jeff
Dayman. Dooley however had his sights on top spot and would
become the new leader.
With Dayman and now Rob Murray
applying the pressure on the leader – it would be a unique
situation that would bring out the caution on lap 18.
A fire flared up somewhere under
the hood of Dooley’s 310c and before Track Officials arrived at
the scene – the source of the blaze dropped out of Dooley’s car
and sat burning in Turn 4.
A valve cover breather sock had
caught fire – falling off of the car allowing Dooley to regroup
and rejoin the field.
Jeff Dayman was now in control
and kept the top spot through two cautions in the closing laps
through to the checkers for his second win of the season.
Dayman was followed by Rob
Murray, Dolf McCready, Billy Hogue and Shayne Pierce
As the Duel on the Dirt now
switches to the Brighton Speedway for their final Home Track
Event August 16th presented by Behan Construction – Team
Merrittville is now set for the Combined 50 lap Events at each
facility in September.
An attempt at a Four-Peat has
been made that much easier thanks to Turn 4’s Hoosier Stock
Fans. Each Merrittville Driver that has competed in both Home
Track Events and makes the trip to Brighton Speedway August 31st
will receive a $50 Gas Card.
