Thorold, Ontario (August 11) For the sixth time of the season, Merrittville Speedway Officials were forced to cancel racing as early evening showers spoiled the CMH Sales and Leasing ‘Help a Child Smile Night’ – August 9th. 

While many race fans were then able to watch the Super Clean Knoxville Nationals presented by Lucas Oil on Speed – they were not able to enjoy the Thorold track’s Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Main Events … the Konzelmann Estate Winery Enduro Qualifier accelerated by Niagara College and the Meridian Credit Union Kids Club Box Car Races.  

“Although the pre-storm severe weather change got us off to a late start,” states (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell, “we were able to get enough of the show in to call it complete ... race fans can look forward to Double Features for all divisions plus the rain delayed Enduro and Box Car Races.” 

Rain Checks will not be honored. 

Lost in the shuffle however is the Pit Crew Contest as it has been removed from the schedule. 

“It’s a shame,” relates Bicknell, “while the crews got to race earlier in the year … the Contest showcases what they do week in and week out in the pits … we are hoping to find a spot for it this year … the weather though really has jumbled up the rest of the year!.” 

Race fans should check their 406 Auto Parts 50-50 Tickets as the winning number had to be drawn that evening. The winning ticket number for the Thorold ASI Group Blackhawks Draw was # 21355. If you have the ticket – please contact the Speedway Office to claim your prize. 

When the rain came – all but two Modified heats were in the books and those will be worked into the program as well as the rain-delayed CMH Sales and Leasing Feature Events. 

Once those are complete – each feature winner will draw a number in Victory Lane to see how many cars from the finishing order are inverted for the second feature of the night. 

The Kids Box Car Races will be scheduled into the race lineup and the Konzelmann Estate Winery Enduro Qualifier accelerated by Niagara College will conclude the night. 

“On August 9th it was shaping up to be quite a night,” boasted Bicknell, “now it’s 10 Feature events for our 5 stock car divisions … the enduro … and the kid’s races … if there is a night not to miss this season – hands down it’s this one!.”  

Before the night was post-ponned, Race fans that entered the Grandstand Area surely had to see all the Box Car Entries on display and pit-side 40 some Enduro Entries had signed in. 

In the first two Konzelmann Enduro Qualifiers accelerated by Niagara College, Jason Coutu (Zavitz Financial Strategies Night May 19th) and Tim McIntosh (Boltworks Piller’s $1 Hot Dog Night June 28th) each won with the two drivers making up the front row for the 100 that closes the season – Sunday September 7th. 

August 9th’s CMH Sales and Leasing Winner now the August 16th Avondale Food Stores Night - will start the 100 from third spot and should either of the Qualifier Winners win the 100 - Niagara College has accelerated their Victory by $200. 

“Niagara College continues to be # 1 in student satisfaction,” boasts (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell, adding, “and we are thrilled they are accelerating our Enduros.”

 Should none of the three drivers come home #1 in the big event – the $200 will still be given away via a draw of starting positions.

 “Preregistering now takes on a whole new meaning,” reveals Bicknell, “anyone that enters by September 1st – will be eligible for a chance at one of four $50 bonuses.”
