Thorold, Ontario (September 9, 2012)
Josh May of De Soto Iowa won the finale of the two day J&S Heating
and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Championship Weekend at
Merrittville Speedway Saturday September 8th.
In other Lucas Oil Weekly Racing
Series Action, Tyler McPherson and Doug Anderson also visited
Victory Lane in the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series and Duel on the
Dirt Big 6 Combined Events.
Derek Wagner was first to lead the
25 lap J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Feature
picking up where he left off from Friday Night. Through the field
action was three wide right away in battles for position with one
driver on the move was Josh Sliter who had moved up to third before
a caution on lap 5.Wagner resumed control on the restart with Josh
May into second but quite a distance behind the leader.
By lap 10, May had caught Wagner
before another caution slowed the pace on lap 11.
May became the new leader in Turn 3
of lap 11 before a red flag stopped the event when Josh Sliter made
contact with a stranded car at the start finish line and flipped his
car.
Sliter was ok but the car wasn’t
able to continue.
Wagner was again in control on the
start with May pulling alongside and regaining top spot in Turn 4 of
lap 14.
At the finish, May opened up almost
a ¼ lap lead over Wagner with former winner Mikey Hay third. Rod
Jones and Matt Hay closed out the top 5.
“It was so smooth out there … I love
running the top groove wherever I race,” revealed May who was some
15 hours from his Iowa home.
With his opening night win and a
second place in Night 2, Derek Wagner became the first Merrittville
Speedway Regular Driver to win the overall J&S Heating and Air
Conditioning Modified Lite Overall Championship in addition to the
Southern Ontario Modified Lite Racing Association Top Driver Award.
“First and foremost … I’d like to
thank Merrittville,” commented Derek Wagner, “I have to thank Bruce
Mason for this great event and the entire weekend.
After a couple tries at a start of
the 50 Lap Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series Feature – Mark Chiddy
continued to set the pace until facing a challenge from Dave
Marcucilli – who took control of top spot on lap 7.
Chiddy would soon be challenged by
Brandon Easey for the runner up spot with Tyler McPherson joining
the front runners by lap 15.
Approaching the half way point the
battle for top spot would find three wide battles between Chiddy,
Marcucilli and McPherson.
Eventually McPherson would take over
top spot crossing the start finish line to start lap 34 – pulling
away to a comfortable lead right away – an advantage he would hold
through to the finish.
Chiddy would settle for second with
Gary Lindberg third ahead of Easey and Marcucilli.
“We’d like to try for a third,” said
Tyler McPherson in Sportsman Super DIRTCar Series Victory Lane for
the second time in as many nights after winning the previous night
at Ransomville, “we tried something different last night and again
tonight – we’ll use it to our advantage.”
“Consistency has been the key the
last couple weeks,” said Chiddy, “I’m real happy to finish second …
a great way to finish off the year here at Merrittville!”
“I have to thank my brother Paul,”
revealed Gary Lindberg, “everyone at BRP especially Randy Williamson
today – after last night we had to put a new front clip on the car
today/”
Rob Murray beat Jeff Dayman to the
start finish line to lead the 50 lap Duel on the Dirt Big 6 Feature
before a lap 6 caution slowed the battle up front between the two
leaders, Kevin Knapp and Ken Sargent.
By lap 10 Cory Turner closed in on
the front runners but in the early going the driver on the move was
the Brighton Speedway Pro Stock of Doug Anderson. Starting 13th at
the drop of the green, Anderson was soon side by side with leader
Murray. Anderson was looking for an edge on the inside and the
outside grooves with the 2 opening up a 10 car length advantage on
the pack.
Anderson took the lead at the start
finish line to start lap 30 – only to be slowed for caution on lap
32. With Anderson out front on the restart, a three wide battle
between Sargent, Knapp and Murray allowed the leader to open up a
good lead until another caution on lap 39.
Despite being slowed by three
cautions in the final stages of the event, Anderson would be able to
open up almost a ¼ lap lead on the field at the finish to become the
first Brighton Speedway Driver to win a Duel on the Dirt Event at
Merrittville.
“I can’t believe the track … so much
grip up top,” said Anderson in Victory Lane, “we came up here to
have some fun – taking home the win makes the 3 hour drive worth
it.”
The 2nd combined Duel on the Dirt
Big 6 Event is set for Brighton Speedway Friday and Saturday
September 21st and 22nd as part of the Cool 100 Applefest Shootout
Weekend presented by Benson Auto Parts.
