Top 3 Spots locked in for Merrittville’s
100 lap Ironman
by Niagara College –
still time to
enter your car
Its one month from today and counting down. Count yourself in when Merrittville Speedway’s 62nd season comes to a crashing end with the 100 lap Enduro accelerated by Niagara College – Sunday September 8th.
“It’s pretty basic,” adds (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell-Jones, “ it’s a street car with safety modifications – everything else is stock as you found it … an Enduro car is not a race car – it’s a car that races.”
There is plenty of time for you to put your Enduro Car together … maybe it’s time to lay a summer time beating down on your winter beater … someone you know may have a wreck they want to get rid of or check out the latest Smart Shopper or anywhere you can to get yourself a ride. So really – it really doesn’t matter where you start – its where and more importantly if you finish. Especially for three drivers.
Starting with the Zavitz Financial Strategies & ZFS Benefit Solutions Victoria Day Event May 20th, two time 100 Champion Glen Hils won. Lee Hils won the June 29th Boltworks Piller’s $1.00 Hot Dog Night while the recent L. St. Amand Enterprises & St. Amand Auto & Truck Repair Bob St. Amand Senior Qualifier accelerated by Niagara College – Ken McLeod came home out front.
Either of the Hils and McLeod will all be eligible for a $500 Bonus – provided that either one comes home # 1 in the 100.
In his second 100 win last season, a late race track maintenance session almost met for disaster for Hils after losing about 10 positions on the ensuing restart. Hils had lapped much of the field over the race but would he have enough of a lead at the conclusion of the 100 lap event? While he was celebrating as the unofficial winner a review of scoring sheets confirmed his $1,000 win.
McLeod who started on the pole settled for third. “Niagara College continues to be # 1 in student satisfaction,” boasts (Merrittville Speedway GM) Erica Bicknell, adding, “and we are thrilled they are accelerating our Enduros.”
Should none of the three drivers win the event the $500 will still be given away via a draw of starting positions.
“Preregistering can have it’s benefits,” reminds Bicknell-Jones, “anyone that enters the 100 by September 1st – will be eligible for a chance at one of 10 $50 bonuses if it’s given away that way and drivers are reminded that their Roof Fins will be available from the Speedway Office after September 1st as well.”
And that’s what happened last season – 10 drivers that registered before the deadline were awarded $50 each through a post race draw.
Friday Night heats will fill the next starting spots with the winner of the first heat starting the 100 from 4th spot … the second heat winner will start 5th and so on. Drivers will not have to supply a scorer for their heat but will still need one for the 100.
“The addition of heats will surely add to the experience for both the drivers … and fans,” predicted Bicknell-Jones, “if there are any cars left at the end of 100 laps … a Backwards Race may be added depending on interest.” Individuals considering re-training for a new career are encouraged to take a serious look at the many programs and opportunities available at Niagara College.
