Baker selected as Grand Marshall for 4th Annual Bob St. Amand Sr. Memorial – 100 lap Big Block Super DIRTcar Series is two weeks away
One piece of the Merrittville Speedway Big Block Super DIRTcar Series puzzle was solved July 20th as teen ager Hannah Baker was picked as honorary Grand Marshall when L. St. Amand Enterprises and St. Amand Auto and Truck presents the 4th Annual Bob St. Amand Senior Memorial Big Block Super DIRTcar Series 100 Monday August 5th.
“I was so excited when I heard my name,” said Baker, daughter of former Merrittville Bomber and Sportsman Driver Kevin Baker, “I have been coming to the races for a number of years and it will be so cool to wave the green flag … I can’t wait.”
Race Fans purchasing their tickets every week since the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints visited on Boltworks’ Night have had the opportunity to enter the free draw for Event Tickets, Club Castropignano Pasta Dinner Tickets and Merrittville Souvenirs.
It’s been a tradition at Merrittville Speedway since 1972 – make it yours in 2013. Race fans that have made Merrittville a tradition over the years may remember Baker’s dad Kevin who won the 1981 and 1983 Bomber Division Championships. Hannah’s grandmother is the late Winnie Harvey.
From the first event in 1972 through to this year’s edition – a who’s who of DIRTcar Modified Racing converge annually on the Canadian showplace to take on Merrittville’s own talented field in the Civic Holiday Classic. Defending winner is local Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modified Driver Mike Bowman.
When Bowman won the recent Jerry Winger Memorial Lucas Oil Slick Mist 50, the newly inducted L. St. Amand Enterprises Wall of Fame legend Lloyd Holt waved the honorary green flag. In the 1973 Edition of the event – Holt was the first Merrittville regular to win. “My favourite Modified Driver is Mike Bowman,” added Baker, “but I also like Robert Baker in the Sportsman Division … it would be so cool if both of them won!” Almost gaining as much in tradition as the race itself is the pre-race Pasta Dinner served up by Merrittville’s Annual Banquet Hosts – Club Castropignano.
For race fans and race teams alike – it’s the best deal in DIRTcar Dining. Feast on fresh pasta and meatballs, garden salad, dinner roll and a can of Pepsi for $10 in advance. “It just adds to much to the event,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell-Jones, “Thorold has a rich Italian Heritage and we’re proud to showcase the Club with an awesome dinner … race fans and race teams alike should come to the event hungry … I know I do … no one goes away hungry.”
