McPherson’s third win comes in Round 2 of the
David Chevrolet King of the Crates Series in
Tim Hortons Night

Now available in stores, the Reeses to Pieces Donut had the winning combination in the Tim Hortons Dueling Donuts Contest. With rain throughout Niagara and severe weather warnings as well … several drivers had the winning combination as Merrittville Speedway hosted Tim Hortons Saturday August 1st without a weather issue.

Cody McPherson of St. Catharines won his third feature of the season in the Rick’s Delivery Sportsman Division. Port Colborne’s Rob Goulding won his first feature in the Van Raine Construction 4 Cylinders while Sanborn NY’s Chad Brachmann won for the second time of 2015 in the Pinty’s Delicious Foods 358 Modified Division. Mark Fawcett rounded out the Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series action taking his 5th Hoosier Stock Win of 2015.

Each of the Feature Winners received Tim Cards with their prize money and as a nice touch from the Fonthill and Welland locations – crews of the winning cars also were awarded gift cards.

“I was worried about the last yellow … it takes a couple laps for the tires to come back in,” said Cody McPherson in Victory Lane after winning Round 2 of the David Chevrolet King of the Crates Mini-Series, “I knew James (Friesen) was right there!”

The 30 lap Event’s first Caution would slow the field on lap 28 after Chris Storm was sitting the wrong way in Turn 2. Prior to the yellow, Friesen took second spot from Jason Moore and began to slowly close in on McPherson.

McPherson set the pace on the original start and was quickly out front comfortably ahead of Brent Begolo and Moore

McPherson set the pace on the restart with Friesen keeping pace. The long green flag run could have been interrupted had Joey Mastroianni not coasted into the infield after falling off the pace. . By lap `10 McPherson had pulled away to almost a straightaway lead and by lap 17 was into lap traffic in the caution free event

On the restart with 2 laps to go McPherson resumed control of top spot with Friesen several car lengths back. Brent Begolo would settle for third with Brad Rouse and Gary Lindberg closing out the top 5.

McPherson began his night being named the Archer Truck Services Driver of the Week after the defending champion took his 2nd win of the season last week in the Hingston Metal Fabricators Night.

“I thought he had me … we’ve been working on that car all week trying to get it race ready once again,” sadi Rob Goulding in Victory Lane for the first time in 2015 in the Van Raine Construction 4 Cylinder Division.

That car was the resurrected Tyler Lafantaisie car of last season that his Twisted Metal Racing team-mates decided to run instead of the #06 car the Welland driver had built for this season.

Kurtis Wiley took control of the 15 lap Feature from the start with the race for second quickly 4 wide between Rob Goulding, Tyler Lafantaisie, Sam Iftody and Kyle Rothwell

Goulding would take over top spot on lap 4 and by the halfway point had driven away to a comfortable lead on Lafantaisie with Iftody in third.

Past lap 10, Lafantaisie would close in on the leader and getting to within a couple car lengths with 2 laps to go. Down the backstretch of the final lap Lafantaisie would pull alongside Goulding but his momentum would be slowed by a last lap incident between Turns 1 and 2.

Goulding would lead the field back to green – holding a half car length at the finish with Kyle Rothwell in third. Brandon Janssens and Kyle Haynes rounded out the Top 5.

“We’ve just been struggling to find this place lately,” said Chad Brachmann whose first win opened the Championship Chase May 2nd on Pinty’s Night, “we’ve come up short a few times – we’ve made some changes are here we are!”

Scott Wood set the initial pace at the start of the 35 lap Feature for the Pinty’s Delicious Foods 358 Modifieds. Quickly Mark D’Ilario took second from Tim Jones and by lap 5 was the new leader.

By lap 10 D’Ilario had driven away from Wood with Tim Jones facing a challenge from a pair of threes – Chad Brachmann and Billy Dunn. Brachmann would get by Jones and a few laps later was by Wood for second.

Around the halfway point D’Ilario would come up on lap traffic which may have been to Brachmann’s advantage.

Just past lap 20 Brachmann would catch the leader – becoming the new leader with lap 24 up on the Lucas Oil Live Leaderboard.

Caution would slow the field for the first time on lap 33 after Travis Miller slowed off the pace.

Brachmann resumed control on the restart and just as Billy Dunn took over second spot caution would set up a one lap dash to the checkered flag.

Brachmann rode the green flag to the checkered flag becoming the 5th driver to register a second W after 9 straight new winners in 2015.

Billy Dunn would settle for second and Mark D’Ilario third with Mat Williamson and Erick Rudolph as the top 5.

“I really wasn’t sure how it would run tonight,” said Mark Fawcett in Hoosier Stock Victory Lane after a busy 24 hours since a lap 1 caution that saw his #32 with heavy damage from an incident at Ohsweken Speedway, “it still needs a little more tweaking however.”

Kyle Pelrine was first to lead the 20 lap Feature with the race for top spot quickly becoming three wide with Kevin Knapp and Jim Lampman applying the pressure.

A couple laps in and Knapp would have control of top spot until Lampman was out front out of Turn 4 to complete lap 3. Knapp edged ahead once again with Lampman staying with the leader.

Just before half way Mark Fawcett would be sitting in third and tracking down the leaders.

On lap 11, Fawcett took control of second and immediately challenged Knapp = taking the lead on lap 13. Lampman would slow on lap 14 and coasted to the pits without caution until the yellow was thrown after contact between Jason Fontaine and Rob Murray in Turn 2.

Fawcett would set the pace on the restart with Knapp trying to regain top spot. A caution for debris on the backstretch slowed the field on lap 16 with Fawcett back in control on the restart.

With Fawcett comfortably out front Knapp would face a challenge from Billy Bleich and Dave Bailey.

At the checkered flag, Fawcett drove away to about a three second advantage over Knapp with Billy Bleich and Dave Bailey taking third and fourth. Dave Silverthorne was awarded 5th..
