Begolo remains atop King of the Crates Series & MacWhirter wins final Enduro Qualifier
July 22, 2018 THOROLD, ONTARIO - Hingston Metal Fabricators Minor Sport Night has 6 Bobcat of Hamilton Weekly Racing Series Drivers getting the W Saturday July 21st at Merrittville Speedway.
Thorold's Brent Begolo continues to lead the standings after winning his second David Chevrolet King of the Crates Mini-Series Feature for the Sportsman Division while Jon MacWhirter took home the third Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale'sEnduro by Niagara College.
Also adding to the win columns were Mat Williamson of St. Catharines with his 6th S&W Service Centre 358 Modified Feature of 2018 while Rob Murray also of the Garden City taking his 5th Hoosier Stock Win. Josh Sliter of Port Colborne won his second Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale's Modified Lite Feature while Anthony Kelly of Niagara Falls scored the hat trick in his rookie season - winning for the third time in the Central Fabricating and Welding 4 Cylinder Division.
"It got a little hairy with all the cautions," said Brent Begolo after his third Sportsman Division win of the season, "I had a good car in my heat ... in the feature - I just rolled around the bottom and minded my own business."
Greg Panunte was first to lead the 30 lap Event and with three and four wide action through the field - Panunte and Rob Knapp quickly pulled away.
When the racing settled down, Begolo landed in third spot and by lap 5 was catching the leaders as was James Friesen. By lap 7, Begolo had taken over the runner up spot. Ahead of coming into lap traffic lap 13 was lucky for Begolo who was now the leader.
Panunte slowed off the pace on lap 20 bringing out the caution for the first of three times in the final stages. With one more lap on the Randy's Smoke Shop Turn 1 Lap Counter, Begolo would be slowed on lap 21 with a multicar incident on the restart delaying the return to green.
With a three wide battle for the runner up spot brewing behind Begolo between Knapp, Cody McPherson and James Friesen another caution would slow the field once again.
With Begolo back in control on the restart the race for the runner up spot was now involving Knapp, McPherson and Brad Rouse.
At the finish, Begolo drove away to a lead of some three seconds with Rob Knapp second. Rouse, McPherson and Friesen would close out the top 5.
The final Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale'sEnduro Qualifier by Niagara College had James Mercer setting the pace at the start of the 25 lap Event before Brent Campbell took control with two laps in.
Mercer battled back and regained top spot until challenged by Jon MacWhirter. Slight contact between the two front runners didn't slow the field but a collision back in the pack brought out the red flag on lap 8.
Involved drivers were OK but some fuel dropped in Turn 3 needed to be burnt off.
Mercer resumed control on the restart with MacWhirter taking control in Turn 2.
At the finish, MacWhirter and Mercer was followed by Shawn Fader.
MacWhirter will now start the Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale's 100 lap Enduro by Niagara College from third spot during the Seaway Mall Motorized Mayhem Event Sunday August 12th.
"I had a good car the first 25 laps," said Mat Williamson after making his Saturday Night Feature Win total match his car number, "I began to think it was starting to rain or someone was losing some fluid ... at the end I was maybe being a little careful - I didn't want to lose it."
A caution on lap 26 only seemed to be in Williamson's favour as in the race to lap 35 - he would drive away to almost a ¼ lap on the field. Before that - Williamson had to hold off challenges from Pete Bicknell who landed in top spot the first time down the backstretch after taking the initial green flag.
After staving off Todd Gordon, Williamson was in second by lap 7 and seven laps later had caught Bicknell. With about a 5 car advantage by half way, Williamson was slowed for caution on lap 19
Bicknell would battle back and retake the lead with the two side by side until caution on lap 22. Williamson would set the pace on the restart but Gary Lindberg taking second spot on about lap 25.
With Williamson and Lindberg holding down first and second, the race to watch in the closing laps was for third spot. Ryan Susice made a late race charge to edge Bicknell at the finish with Mike Bowman fifth.
"It seems like everyone had given up on me," said Rob Murray after returning to Hoosier Stock Victory Lane after a three event absence, "my wife ... my crew - they're all wearing Brad Sheehan T Shirts ... it feels good to be back here."
Bill Podwinski was first to lead the 20 lap Feature until Kyle Pelrine took control on lap 2. From a fifth place start, Murray was quickly into the runner up spot and challenging the leader.
Murray would edge ahead with Pelrine fighting back before caution.
With Murray out front on the restart - the former champion would drive away from the field to the halfway point.
The race to watch was the one for third between Bailey who won the last event and Brad Sheehan who took two straight before that.
At the finish, Murray and Pelrine were followed by Murray's stepson Sheehan with Bailey and Podwinski as the Top 5.
After the initial start was called off. Marty deMoel set the pace at the start of the 20 lap Feature for the Vansickle Pet Valu & Groomingdale's Modified Lites until Chris Watson quickly took control of top spot.
The pace was slowed again on lap 2 with Watson losing the lead to Tyler Winger after racing resumed. Winger would also have to face an early restart as leader on lap 3 and was slowed again on lap 5.
On the move prior to the rash of cautions was Josh Sliter but it wasn't until a lap 6 restart that Sliter would become the new leader.
Once out front, Sliter was able to drive away and just ahead of lap traffic with 5 to go had a two second advantage.
At the finish, Sliter was followed by Winger, Watson, Jeff May and RJ Pietz.
Cole Hardy was first to lead the 15 lap Feature for the Central Fabricating & Welding 4 Cylinders, setting the pace until lap 7 when front runner Alex Riley slowed with problems.
Hardy resumed control on the restart with racing behind him 4 wide.
After sitting in 5th spot on the restart caution right away had Tony Kelly sitting in top spot after a lap 9 restart Two laps later Kelly would be slowed once again for an incident on lap 10.
With 2 laps to go, Anthony Kelly was able to take the lead from his dad Tony and held top spot to the checkered flag. Cole Hardy was also able to get by Tony Kelly who settled for third. Dan McKay and Chris Laskey closed out the Top 5.
